If you’re referring to the viral claim “If you sleep on your right side, there’s something important you should know,” the evidence is more nuanced than many social-media posts suggest.
🛏️ Is sleeping on your right side bad?
For most healthy adults, no. There is no general medical rule that you must avoid sleeping on your right side.
One important exception is acid reflux/GERD. Research suggests that sleeping on the left side may reduce nighttime reflux compared with sleeping on the right side, because of the position of the stomach and esophagus.
On the other hand, side sleeping can sometimes be helpful for snoring or obstructive sleep apnea compared with sleeping flat on your back.
What about the heart?
You may see claims that right-side sleeping is dangerous because it “compresses the heart.” There isn’t good evidence that healthy people need to avoid the right side for this reason. People with certain heart conditions may have individual preferences or recommendations from their doctor.
Bottom line: If you sleep comfortably on your right side and don’t have symptoms, there’s generally no reason to worry. If you have nighttime heartburn, trying your left side may be worthwhile.
