“New method: colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination” — what’s the real story?
There are newer, less-invasive ways to examine or screen the colon, but the headline is misleading if it suggests that conventional colonoscopy has been replaced.
One important technology is colon capsule endoscopy. You swallow a capsule containing a tiny camera, which travels naturally through the digestive tract while taking images of the colon. The capsule is then passed in the stool. The FDA recognizes colon-capsule imaging systems, and newer research in 2026 continues to evaluate their accuracy.

What makes the capsule different?
No flexible camera tube is inserted through the rectum.
You swallow a pill-sized camera instead.
It can detect polyps and other abnormalities.
It still generally requires bowel preparation, so it’s not completely preparation-free.

If it finds a suspicious polyp, you may still need a conventional colonoscopy to biopsy or remove it. A capsule can’t perform those treatments.
A recent 2026 multicenter study of a newer capsule system achieved complete visualization in about 91% of participants and showed promising detection performance, but conventional colonoscopy remained the reference procedure and achieved complete examination in all participants in that study.

There are other non-invasive options too
For average-risk colorectal-cancer screening, there are also stool-based tests and an FDA-approved blood test. However, an abnormal result from these tests generally requires follow-up colonoscopy.
