🌺 How to Keep Geraniums Full of Flowers
The secret isn’t a special watering trick—geraniums flower best when watering, sunlight, drainage, and feeding are balanced.
1. Water deeply, but don’t keep the soil constantly wet
Check the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of soil with your finger.
If it’s dry, water thoroughly until some water drains from the bottom.
Empty any water sitting in the saucer.
Don’t water again simply because the surface looks slightly dry; check the soil first.
2. Give them plenty of sunlight ☀️
Most geraniums flower best with several hours of direct sunlight each day. Insufficient light can produce lots of leaves but fewer flowers.
3. Don’t leave the roots sitting in water
Use a container with drainage holes and well-draining potting mix. Constantly wet roots can lead to root problems.
4. Feed during active growth 🌱
A suitable flowering-plant fertilizer used according to its label can support continued blooming. More fertilizer isn’t necessarily better.
5. Remove spent flowers
Pinch or cut off faded flower clusters and yellowing leaves. This encourages many geraniums to put energy into producing new flowers.
🚫 Avoid viral watering hacks
Don’t routinely add sugar, salt, vinegar, baking soda, or other kitchen ingredients to the soil. These aren’t necessary for healthy geraniums and can damage the roots or alter the soil.
The simple formula: ☀️ plenty of light + 💧 water when the soil needs it + 🪴 good drainage + 🌸 regular deadheading = much better flowering.
