Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical function. It becomes more common with age, but significant muscle loss is not something you simply have to accept. Strength training and adequate nutrition can make a meaningful difference.

Why does muscle loss happen?
Common contributors include:
Aging: Muscles gradually become less responsive to the signals that stimulate growth.
Too little resistance exercise: Muscle needs regular loading to maintain strength.
Insufficient protein or calories: Poor nutrition can accelerate muscle loss.
Long periods of inactivity or bed rest: Even relatively short periods of inactivity can cause substantial weakness in older adults.
Chronic illnesses: Conditions that cause inflammation, poor appetite, or reduced activity can contribute to sarcopenia.

The two most important solutions
1. Do resistance exercise.
This is the cornerstone of sarcopenia treatment. You don’t need a gym: exercises such as chair stands, wall push-ups, resistance bands, and light weights can be used. Progressively making the exercises more challenging is important. Clinical guidelines strongly recommend resistance-based exercise for people with sarcopenia.

2. Get enough protein.
For many healthy older adults, expert recommendations suggest roughly 1.0–1.2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day; people who are malnourished or dealing with significant illness may need more. Individual needs can differ, particularly with kidney disease, so discuss your target with a clinician or dietitian.

Don’t focus only on muscle size
Strength and function matter enormously. Difficulty getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or walking at your usual pace can be important clues. Screening tools can include walking speed, grip strength, or simple questionnaires, with formal diagnosis using objective measurements when appropriate.
