These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

Visible Signs That May Be Associated With Liver Disease

Some changes in your skin, eyes, hands, or abdomen can occur with liver disease—particularly advanced liver disease or cirrhosis. However, these signs are not specific to liver disease, and some people with liver disease have no visible symptoms at all.

Possible signs include:

Yellow skin or yellowing of the whites of the eyes (jaundice)
Persistent itching
Swelling of the abdomen, legs, ankles, or feet
Easy bruising or bleeding
Spider-like blood vessels on the skin (spider angiomas)
Red or blotchy palms
Dark urine or unusually pale stools
Unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, or significant fatigue
Confusion, difficulty concentrating, or unusual drowsiness in more advanced disease.

Don’t rely on appearance alone

Early liver disease can be completely silent, so feeling well or having normal-looking skin doesn’t rule it out. Doctors may use blood tests, imaging, and sometimes other tests to determine whether the liver is damaged.

Yellowing of the eyes or skin should be medically assessed promptly, because jaundice can have several causes, some of which require urgent treatment.
