The 4 types of people who shouldn’t eat cabbage

“4 Types of People Who Shouldn’t Eat Cabbage” — Is That Really True?

Cabbage is a nutritious cruciferous vegetable, and most people can eat it safely. There isn’t good evidence that four broad groups must completely avoid cabbage.

However, some people should be more careful:

1. 💊 People taking warfarin

Cabbage contains vitamin K, which can affect warfarin’s anticoagulant effect. You generally don’t need to eliminate cabbage, but keeping your vitamin-K intake reasonably consistent is important. Discuss major dietary changes with your clinician.

2. 🦋 People with certain thyroid concerns

Cruciferous vegetables contain compounds that can interfere with iodine utilization in certain circumstances. However, normal amounts of cooked cabbage are not generally something people with thyroid disease need to completely avoid. If you take levothyroxine, follow your prescribed instructions and ask your clinician about timing with meals.

3. 🫄 People with IBS who find cabbage triggers symptoms

Cabbage can cause gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort or changes in bowel habits in susceptible people. Interestingly, Monash University rates common raw cabbage as low FODMAP at a tested serving size, so tolerance and portion size matter.

4. 🤧 Anyone with a cabbage/cruciferous-vegetable allergy

True allergy is uncommon, but it can occur. Someone who develops hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or difficulty breathing after eating cabbage should stop eating it and seek appropriate medical evaluation; breathing difficulty or throat swelling is an emergency.
