5 Things You Should Know Before Touching a Lump on Your Wrist!

If you have a lump on your wrist, don’t assume it’s something you can safely pop or squeeze. One of the most common causes is a ganglion cyst, a benign, fluid-filled lump that often develops near a wrist joint.

5 things to know before touching it

  1. It may be a ganglion cyst—but you can’t diagnose it just by feel.
Ganglion cysts are usually smooth and may change size, sometimes becoming larger with wrist activity. Other types of lumps can occur, so a new or unexplained lump deserves evaluation.
  2. Don’t try to pop, puncture or smash it.
Using a needle or hitting the lump with a heavy object can cause infection, skin damage, nerve injury or other injury, and the cyst can return anyway.
  3. Many ganglion cysts don’t require treatment.
If it’s painless and isn’t interfering with your hand or wrist, a clinician may recommend simply watching it. Some disappear on their own.
  4. If it’s painful, treatment is available.
A wrist support may reduce symptoms. If necessary, a healthcare professional can drain the cyst with a needle or remove it surgically. Aspiration can be followed by recurrence because the connection to the joint may remain.
  5. Know when to get it checked promptly.
Arrange medical evaluation if the lump is getting larger, hard and doesn’t move, or you’re simply unsure what it is. A lump that becomes very painful, hot or red needs more urgent assessment.

Bottom line: A wrist lump is often harmless, but don’t try a DIY “bursting” remedy. Have a clinician identify it first—especially if it is new, changing, painful, or affecting movement or sensation.
