If your pillows have turned yellow from sweat, body oils, or moisture, these 3 simple methods can help freshen and whiten them:
Wash according to the care label 🧺
For machine-washable cotton or polyester pillows, use warm water and a mild detergent. An extra rinse cycle can help remove detergent and residue. Avoid washing memory-foam or latex pillows unless the manufacturer specifically says they’re washable.
Try a baking-soda and vinegar wash 🧼
Add about ½ cup of baking soda along with your normal detergent, then use ½–1 cup of white vinegar in the rinse compartment. Don’t mix vinegar directly with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.
Dry them completely ☀️
Thorough drying is essential to prevent mildew and musty smells. Tumble-dry washable pillows on a suitable setting, checking periodically and fluffing them. If the care label permits, air-drying in sunlight can also help freshen them.
Tip: For stubborn yellow stains, check the care label before using oxygen bleach; it can be gentler on many fabrics than chlorine bleach. Always test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first.
