Pain on the Left Side of the Body: What Could It Mean?

Left-sided pain can have many different causes, and the location alone isn’t enough to determine what’s wrong. It could come from muscles, nerves, the digestive system, kidneys, or—when it’s in the chest—potentially the heart or lungs.

🩺 Some possibilities

  • Chest/rib area: Muscle strain or costochondritis can cause left-sided chest pain, but heart and lung conditions can also cause it.
  • Upper abdomen: Gas, indigestion and other digestive problems are common causes, but conditions involving abdominal organs can also produce left-sided pain.
  • Side or back: Kidney stones or kidney infections can cause pain in the side/back, particularly when accompanied by urinary symptoms, fever or blood in the urine.
  • Arm, hip or leg: Musculoskeletal injuries and nerve irritation are common possibilities.

🚨 When left-sided pain is an emergency

If the pain is new, unexplained or severe, particularly in the chest, don’t assume it’s muscle pain.

Seek emergency medical help if you have chest pain accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness/fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. These can be symptoms of a heart attack.

Sudden severe abdominal or side pain, especially with vomiting, fever, blood in the urine/stool, or significant tenderness, also warrants urgent evaluation.
