Fastest Way to Get Rid of Mildew on Shower Silicone
If the black marks are mildew growing on the surface of the silicone, you can often clean them. But if the discoloration has penetrated into the silicone sealant, cleaning may not completely remove it. In that case, replacing the silicone is the reliable solution.
Try this first
You’ll need:
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Paper towels
- An old toothbrush
- Gloves
- Clean water
- Ventilate the bathroom and put on gloves.
- Dry the silicone thoroughly.
- Soak paper towels in 3% hydrogen peroxide and press them firmly against the affected silicone.
- Leave them for approximately 30–60 minutes.
- Remove the towels and gently scrub the area with an old toothbrush.
- Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
- Leave the shower well ventilated so the silicone can dry completely.
If the black staining won’t disappear
That’s a sign the mildew may have penetrated the silicone. Don’t keep scrubbing aggressively—you can damage the seal and create more places for water to enter.
The better solution is:
Remove the old silicone → clean and dry the joint thoroughly → apply new bathroom-grade, mold-resistant silicone.
⚠️ Important safety rule
Never mix cleaning chemicals. In particular, don’t combine hydrogen peroxide with bleach, vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners. Use one product at a time and rinse the surface thoroughly before using anything else.
Keep it from returning
After showering, use a squeegee or towel to remove excess water, run the exhaust fan during and after the shower, and keep the silicone as dry as practical. Persistent mildew can also indicate poor ventilation or a moisture leak behind the seal.
