Top 5 nutrients to reduce swelling in feet and legs

Top 5 nutrients often discussed for reducing swelling in the feet and legs

A key point first: leg swelling (edema) isn’t usually caused simply by a lack of vitamins or minerals. It can result from too much sodium, prolonged sitting/standing, medications, vein problems, or conditions involving the heart, kidneys, liver, or lymphatic system.

If your swelling is related to diet, these are the nutrients worth paying attention to:

  1. Potassium 🥔
Found in potatoes, beans, lentils, bananas, tomatoes, and leafy greens. Potassium helps regulate fluid and electrolyte balance. Don’t take potassium supplements or deliberately increase potassium if you have kidney disease or take certain medications without medical advice.
  2. Magnesium 🌰
Found in nuts, seeds, spinach, beans, and whole grains. It’s an essential mineral, but magnesium supplements aren’t a proven general treatment for unexplained leg edema.
  3. Protein 🥚
Adequate dietary protein is important for maintaining normal fluid balance. Severe, prolonged protein deficiency can itself contribute to edema.
  4. Vitamin B6 🥬
It plays important roles in normal metabolism and nervous-system function. However, there isn’t strong evidence that taking B6 supplements will treat ordinary leg swelling, so don’t use high-dose B6 as an edema treatment.
  5. Vitamin C 🍊
Important for healthy connective tissue and blood vessels. Get it primarily from foods such as citrus, peppers, berries and vegetables rather than assuming a supplement will remove swelling.

🧂 One thing that’s often more important: sodium

If excess salt is contributing to fluid retention, reducing sodium may help more than adding a supplement. Both Mayo Clinic and the NHS list high salt intake as a common contributor to edema.

Also helpful for uncomplicated swelling can be gentle movement and elevating the legs.
