Aneurysm: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore ⚠️

An aneurysm is a weakened area of an artery that bulges outward. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms, but if one leaks or ruptures, it can become a life-threatening emergency. (Mayo Clinic)

🧠 Possible signs of a brain aneurysm

An unruptured brain aneurysm may cause no symptoms. If it becomes large enough to press on nearby nerves, possible symptoms include:

  1. Pain above or behind one eye
  2. Blurred or double vision
  3. A drooping eyelid or enlarged pupil
  4. Numbness or weakness on one side of the face
  5. Seizures (Mayo Clinic)

🚨 The biggest warning sign

A ruptured brain aneurysm typically causes a sudden, extremely severe headache—often described as the worst headache of someone’s life. It may occur with nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, vision problems, confusion, seizure, or loss of consciousness. (Mayo Clinic)

This is an emergency. Seek emergency medical care immediately.

🫀 Aortic aneurysm warning signs

Aortic aneurysms can also be silent. When symptoms occur, they can include sudden or severe chest/upper-back pain, abdominal or back pain, or a pulsing sensation near the belly button. A rupture can cause life-threatening internal bleeding. (CDC)

Who is at greater risk?

Risk can increase with smoking, high blood pressure, increasing age, and certain inherited conditions or family history. Controlling blood pressure and avoiding tobacco are important preventive measures. (nhs.uk)

Bottom line: Most aneurysms don’t announce themselves with obvious symptoms. But a sudden, severe headache, sudden severe chest/back/abdominal pain, fainting, or neurological changes should never be ignored.
