Warning! If you have found this insect in your home, it’s a sign that you need to….. SEE MORE.

If you’re referring to the viral headline “If you have found this insect in your home…”, the insect appears to be a pantry moth (often the Indian meal moth). The article behind this exact headline says its appearance is a reason to check your pantry and dry-food supplies.

🦋 What to look for

A pantry-moth infestation may show up as:

  • Small grayish-brown moths flying around cupboards
  • Silky webbing inside flour, cereal, rice, grains, nuts, pet food, or other dry goods
  • Food that has become unusually clumped together
  • Small cream-colored larvae/caterpillars with darker heads
  • Larvae wandering away from food toward walls or ceilings to pupate

What to do

  1. Inspect all dry foods, including unopened packages.
  2. Discard visibly infested food in a sealed bag.
  3. Vacuum pantry shelves, corners, cracks, and crevices thoroughly.
  4. Wipe shelves and remove spilled grains or crumbs.
  5. Store susceptible foods in tightly sealed containers.
  6. Consider pantry-moth pheromone traps to monitor whether adults remain.

Finding one moth doesn’t necessarily mean your entire kitchen is infested, but repeated sightings or larvae/webbing are a good reason to investigate.

If you have a photo of the insect, I can help identify it—because different household insects require very different responses.
