The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in the Throat (and What Can Help)

Having a constant feeling of mucus or phlegm in the throat is common and can happen for many reasons. It does not always mean you have an infection.

Common causes of ongoing throat mucus

1. Postnasal drip

  • Mucus from the nose or sinuses drains down the back of the throat.
  • Often caused by allergies, colds, sinus irritation, or dry air.
  • May cause frequent throat clearing, coughing, or a “lump” sensation.

2. Allergies

  • Pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander can trigger excess mucus production.
  • Often comes with sneezing, itchy eyes, or a stuffy nose.

3. Acid reflux (GERD or silent reflux)

  • Stomach acid can irritate the throat and create a feeling of mucus, even without heartburn.
  • Other clues include hoarseness, throat clearing, coughing, or a sour taste.

4. Smoking or exposure to irritants

  • Cigarette smoke, pollution, and strong chemicals can irritate airways and increase mucus.

5. Dehydration

  • When the body lacks fluids, mucus can become thicker and harder to clear.

6. Respiratory conditions

  • Asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other lung conditions can cause ongoing mucus production, especially with coughing or wheezing.

Ways to reduce throat mucus

Drink enough fluids to help thin mucus.
Use a humidifier if indoor air is dry.
Try saline nasal spray or rinses if congestion or postnasal drip is involved.
Avoid smoke and strong irritants.
