7 Signs of Arthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore
Arthritis is not just “normal aging.” It refers to a group of conditions that can cause joint pain, inflammation, stiffness, and reduced movement. Recognizing early signs can help with diagnosis and treatment.
1. Persistent joint pain
- Pain that lasts for weeks or keeps returning—especially in the hands, knees, hips, feet, or spine—may be a sign of arthritis.
2. Joint stiffness (especially in the morning)
- Stiffness after waking up that lasts more than 30–60 minutes can be a warning sign, particularly for inflammatory types of arthritis.
3. Swollen or warm joints
- Joints that look puffy, feel warm, or become tender may indicate inflammation.
4. Reduced range of motion
- Difficulty bending, gripping, climbing stairs, or performing everyday movements can occur as joint problems progress.
5. Grinding, clicking, or cracking with pain
- Sounds from joints are common, but noises combined with pain, swelling, or weakness may need evaluation.
6. Fatigue or feeling unwell
- Some forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can cause fatigue, low energy, or flu-like feelings.
7. Changes in the appearance of joints
- Enlarged knuckles, crooked fingers, visible bumps, or changes in joint shape can occur with some types of arthritis.
