What’s the Small Round Hole on Your Nail Clipper For?

That little hole on a standard nail clipper actually serves a surprisingly clever purpose!
While it might look like a spot for a keychain, its primary functions are practical:

1. The Key Ring (The Most Common Use)

As you guessed, the most frequent design purpose is to attach the clipper to a keyring, lanyard, or small chain so it doesn’t get lost in a drawer or travel bag.

2. The Wire Stripper or Lever Hack (The Lesser-Known Trick)

Depending on the specific style of the clipper, that hole can sometimes be used as a makeshift tool to strip the plastic coating off small electrical wires or to thread a wire through for twisting.
However, its most popular “life hack” utility is for clearing stuck clippings: if your clipper has a pivoting handle that flips around, sometimes a thin wire or pin can be inserted through that hole to help align or push out the pin holding the lever in place if you ever need to take it apart for deep cleaning.

Summary

It’s mostly there so you can attach it to a keyring, but its simple engineering has inspired plenty of clever DIY uses over the years!
