9 Foot Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Foot problems can have many causes, so these symptoms do not automatically mean you have diabetes or another serious disease. But persistent or unusual changes deserve attention.

  1. Numbness or loss of feeling in your feet.
  2. Tingling or pins-and-needles sensations.
  3. Burning or unexplained foot pain.
  4. Swelling, especially if it is new or affects only one foot.
  5. A foot that feels unusually cold, particularly compared with the other foot.
  6. Pale, blue, or unusually dark skin color on the foot.
  7. Sores or cuts that heal very slowly or don’t heal.
  8. Pain or cramping when walking that improves after resting.
  9. New weakness or difficulty walking or maintaining balance.

These symptoms can occur with conditions including diabetes-related nerve problems, poor circulation, nerve disorders, injuries, or infections. For example, peripheral artery disease can cause walking-related leg pain, cold feet, color changes, numbness, and slow-healing wounds.

If you have diabetes, checking your feet regularly for cuts, redness, swelling, blisters, sores, and changes in sensation is particularly important.

🚨 Get medical help promptly

Seek urgent medical attention for a foot that suddenly becomes very cold, pale/blue, severely painful, numb, or weak, or for a rapidly worsening wound, redness, swelling, or infection.
