People Apparently Still Don’t Know What Paprika Is Made From

It is one of the most common spices in the pantry, yet its exact origin continues to surprise people!
Paprika is made simply from ground, dried sweet peppers belonging to the Capsicum annuum species (the same family that includes bell peppers, chili peppers, and jalapeños, though specifically varieties bred to be mild, sweet, and rich in carotenoids).
Here is what most people miss about how this vibrant red powder comes together:
  • It’s not just one specific “pepper”: Unlike black pepper (which comes from peppercorns) or cinnamon (which comes from tree bark), paprika is a blend of dried chili peppers. Depending on the region and the desired flavor profile, these peppers may be air-dried, sun-dried, or even smoked over oak wood (which is how authentic Spanish pimentón gets its distinct campfire flavor).
  • The heat level varies wildly: While American supermarket “paprika” is usually mild and almost sweet, Hungarian paprika is graded into eight distinct categories ranging from sweet and delicate to fiery hot.
  • It’s packed with vitamin C and antioxidants: Because it is made entirely from pulverized peppers, paprika is rich in carotenoids (like capsanthin), which give it its deep red color and provide strong antioxidant properties.
Did you recently come across a viral post or trivia question about what paprika is made of, or were you looking at a recipe that called for a specific type (like smoked vs. sweet)?
