High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol: Avoid These 3 Things Every Morning
Your morning routine can support your heart health—or make it harder to manage blood pressure and cholesterol. If you have both conditions, pay special attention to these three habits.
1. Avoid a Very Salty Breakfast
Processed meats, salty packaged foods, instant meals, and heavily salted foods can add a lot of sodium to your diet. Too much sodium can raise blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends limiting sodium, with an ideal goal of 1,500 mg per day for most adults with high blood pressure.
Choose fresh fruit, oatmeal, whole-grain foods, or eggs prepared with little added salt instead.
2. Avoid Breakfasts High in Saturated Fat
Foods such as fatty processed meats, butter, full-fat dairy, and some fried foods can be high in saturated fat. Eating too much saturated fat can raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.
Instead, try nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruit, vegetables, or lean protein.
3. Avoid Starting the Day With Sugary Drinks
Soda, sweetened tea, energy drinks, and other sugary beverages can add a lot of added sugar without providing much nutritional value. A heart-healthy eating pattern emphasizes minimizing added sugars and choosing minimally processed foods.
Water, unsweetened tea, or plain coffee can be better choices for many people.
A Better Morning
A heart-friendly breakfast can be simple: oatmeal with fruit and nuts, plain yogurt with berries, or whole-grain toast with a healthy protein source.
Remember that one breakfast does not determine your heart health. Your overall eating pattern, physical activity, weight, medications, and control of blood pressure and cholesterol all matter.
Bottom line: If you have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, focus on reducing sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar—not on avoiding every individual food.
