*8 things you should never put in the dishwasher* (and why)

in the dishwasher, along with the reasons why:

1. Cast Iron Skillets

  • Why: The high heat and harsh detergent strip away the crucial seasoned oil coating, leaving your skillet completely vulnerable to rust and ruining its non-stick surface.

  • How to clean: Hand-wash with warm water (and a tiny bit of mild soap if necessary), dry thoroughly on the stove over low heat, and rub with a light layer of oil.

2. Wooden Cutting Boards & Utensils

  • Why: Prolonged exposure to hot water and intense drying cycles causes wood to swell, warp, and eventually crack or splinter. The harsh heat can also dry out the natural oils in the wood.

  • How to clean: Wash gently by hand with warm soapy water and dry immediately with a towel. Periodically condition with food-grade mineral oil.

3. Sharp Knives (Chef’s Knives, Paring Knives)

  • Why: The intense water jets can cause knives to rattle against other utensils, dulling the blade edges. Additionally, high heat can degrade or loosen handles (especially wooden or glued ones).

  • How to clean: Hand-wash immediately after use with warm soapy water and dry by wiping away from the sharp edge.

4. Insulated Travel Mugs & Tumblers (like Yeti or Hydro Flask)

  • Why: Most vacuum-insulated travel mugs have a tiny thermal seal at the bottom. The extreme heat of a dishwasher can break this seal, ruining the vacuum barrier and rendering your mug unable to keep drinks hot or cold.

  • How to clean: Wash by hand using a bottle brush, warm water, and dish soap.

5. Non-Stick Cookware (Teflon & Ceramic)

  • Why: Dishwasher detergents are abrasive, and the intense water pressure combined with heat can degrade, scratch, or peel the delicate non-stick coating over time.

  • How to clean: Use a soft sponge, warm water, and mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive scouring pads.

6. Copper and Brass Items

  • Why: Dishwasher detergent is often too harsh and alkaline, causing copper and brass to oxidize rapidly, discolor, or turn a dull, blotchy dark brown.

  • How to clean: Hand-wash with warm soapy water and restore shine using a specialized copper cleaner or a paste of lemon juice and baking soda.

7. Delicate Crystal and Antique Glassware

  • Why: Fine crystal is softer and more brittle than standard glass. The high temperatures can cause thermal shock (cracking), and the harsh detergents can etch a permanent, cloudy film onto the surface (glass corrosion).

  • How to clean: Hand-wash carefully in warm water with a mild soap, and dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth.

8. Aluminum Cookware and Baking Sheets

  • Why: Raw or lightly anodized aluminum reacts poorly to strong dishwasher detergents, often resulting in oxidation that leaves behind an ugly, chalky gray residue and pitting on the metal surface.

  • How to clean: Hand-wash with warm soapy water. For tough baked-on grease, use a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
