You cut open a watermelon and saw cracks? Stop eating it immediately! Here’s what it means!

You Cut Open a Watermelon and See Cracks? Here’s What It Really Means

Finding cracks inside a watermelon can look strange, but it doesn’t automatically mean the fruit is unsafe to eat.

What Causes the Cracks?

This condition is commonly called “hollow heart.” It can happen because of growing conditions and can cause cracks or spaces to form inside the flesh. These watermelons are generally safe to eat and may even taste sweeter because sugars can become concentrated around the cracks.

When Should You Avoid It?

Cracks themselves aren’t necessarily a food-safety problem. However, throw the watermelon away if you notice mold, an unpleasant or fermented smell, slimy flesh, significant decay, or other obvious signs of spoilage.

A Simple Tip

Wash the outside of the watermelon before cutting it, use a clean knife and cutting surface, and refrigerate cut watermelon promptly.

Bottom line: Don’t panic when you see cracks inside your watermelon. They can be a natural growing condition rather than a sign that the fruit is poisonous or diseased.
