Pain on the Left Side of the Body: What Could It Mean?

Pain on the left side of your body can come from many different causes. Sometimes it’s a muscle strain or digestive problem; other times, pain in the left chest or upper abdomen can signal something that needs urgent medical attention.

The location, severity, timing, and other symptoms matter.

🫀 1. Heart-Related Problems

Pain or pressure on the left side of the chest can sometimes be related to the heart.

A heart attack may cause pressure, squeezing, tightness, or aching in the chest that can spread to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen. Shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or lightheadedness may also occur.

Don’t assume chest pain is “just gas” or a muscle problem.

💪 2. Muscle or Rib Problems

A pulled muscle, bruised rib, or inflammation around the ribs can cause pain on the left side.

For example, costochondritis can cause sharp or aching pain around the breastbone and is often felt on the left side. It may become worse with movement, coughing, sneezing, or deep breathing.

🧠 3. Nerve or Back Problems

A pinched nerve or sciatica can cause pain, burning, tingling, or numbness that travels down one side of the body.

Sciatica commonly affects one side and can travel from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg.

🫁 4. Lung or Chest Conditions

Problems involving the lungs or the lining around them can produce one-sided chest pain, sometimes accompanied by coughing or difficulty breathing.

Sudden chest pain with significant breathing difficulty should be treated as an emergency.

🥣 5. Digestive Problems

Pain on the left side of the abdomen can sometimes come from relatively common problems such as gas, indigestion, constipation, or a strained abdominal muscle.

But abdominal pain can also have more serious causes, so persistent, severe, or worsening pain shouldn’t be ignored.

🩺 6. Problems Affecting the Left Kidney or Urinary Tract

Pain toward the left side or back can sometimes be associated with kidney stones or urinary problems, particularly when accompanied by urinary symptoms, nausea, fever, or blood in the urine.

A healthcare professional can determine whether testing is needed.

🩸 7. Spleen Problems

The spleen is located beneath the left rib cage. A serious injury to the left upper abdomen or lower chest can sometimes rupture the spleen and cause internal bleeding.

Left upper abdominal pain with left shoulder pain, dizziness, confusion, or fainting after an injury requires emergency medical attention.
