10 Often Overlooked Metoprolol Side Effects That Deserve More Attention

10 often-overlooked metoprolol side effects

  1. Persistent fatigue
Feeling unusually tired, weak, or less able to exercise can occur because metoprolol slows the heart rate and reduces the heart’s response to exertion.

  2. Dizziness or lightheadedness
This can result from lowered blood pressure or a slower heart rate. Recurrent dizziness—especially when standing—or near-fainting deserves medical review.

  3. An unusually slow pulse
Metoprolol intentionally slows heart rate, but excessive slowing can cause weakness, dizziness, fainting, or other symptoms. The risk can increase when it is combined with medicines such as diltiazem, verapamil, digoxin, or clonidine.

  4. Sleep disturbance and vivid dreams
Beta blockers can be associated with insomnia, vivid dreams, or nightmares. These symptoms aren’t always recognized as medication-related.

  5. Low mood or depression
Depression is included among reported metoprolol adverse reactions. A persistent or significant change in mood should be discussed with the prescriber.

  6. Cold hands and feet
Metoprolol can contribute to cold extremities, and people with existing circulation problems may notice this more strongly.

  7. Sexual problems
Some people report reduced sex drive or erectile difficulties. The evidence that metoprolol directly causes these problems isn’t conclusive, and the NHS describes this as uncommon.

  8. Shortness of breath or wheezing
New breathlessness shouldn’t automatically be attributed to the medication—or ignored. Metoprolol can cause respiratory problems in susceptible people and can also complicate existing bronchospastic disease.

  9. Low-blood-sugar symptoms may be harder to recognize
In people with diabetes, beta blockers can mask some warning signs of hypoglycemia, particularly the normal racing heartbeat.

  10. Diarrhea, nausea, or stomach discomfort
Gastrointestinal effects can be overlooked or attributed to something eaten. Diarrhea is specifically listed among metoprolol’s adverse reactions, while nausea and vomiting are also reported
