If you have phlegm or mucus in your chest or throat, you can often make it easier to clear it with simple measures. The best approach depends on whether it’s from a cold, allergies, post-nasal drip, asthma, reflux, or another cause.
Natural measures that can help
-
Drink plenty of fluids. Water and warm drinks can help keep mucus thinner and easier to cough up.
-
Try warm honey-lemon water. Honey can soothe an irritated throat and reduce coughing. Do not give honey to children under 1 year.
-
Use humidified air. A cool-mist humidifier can reduce irritation from dry air. Keep the device clean to prevent mold and bacteria.
-
Take a warm shower. Moist air may temporarily make thick mucus easier to clear.
-
Gargle with warm salt water if mucus is mainly irritating your throat.
-
Avoid cigarette smoke and vaping, which can increase mucus and airway irritation.
-
Stay gently active if you’re well enough; movement can help loosen respiratory secretions.
What about ginger, turmeric, or herbal remedies?
They may soothe symptoms, but there is no reliable evidence that a particular herb “cleans” mucus from the lungs. Be especially cautious with concentrated herbal mixtures and essential oils, which can irritate the airways.
When to get medical help
Seek prompt medical attention if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, confusion, blue/gray lips, or severe weakness. See a clinician if symptoms are getting worse, persist unusually long, or you have a high or persistent fever.
Also, yellow or green mucus doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics; mucus color alone can’t reliably distinguish a bacterial infection from a viral one.
