12 Worst Side effects of Amlodipine You Should NEVER Ignore

12 amlodipine side effects you should know about

The headline “worst side effects” can make amlodipine sound more dangerous than it is. Amlodipine is widely used for high blood pressure and angina, and most people tolerate it well.

Common effects

  1. Swollen ankles, feet, or legs — particularly with higher doses.

  2. Headache

  3. Dizziness or lightheadedness

  4. Flushing or feeling unusually warm

  5. Palpitations or a more noticeable heartbeat

  6. Tiredness or weakness

  7. Nausea

  8. Abdominal discomfort

  9. Constipation or diarrhea

  10. Sleepiness

Ankle swelling is particularly characteristic of amlodipine and can become more likely as the dose increases.

Less common but important

  1. Very low blood pressure or fainting — especially if accompanied by significant dizziness.

  2. Serious allergic reaction or severe skin reaction — rare, but swelling of the face/throat, difficulty breathing, blistering, or peeling skin requires urgent medical attention. Rare cases of pancreatitis and significant liver problems have also been reported.
