What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

Normal blood pressure by age

A common misconception is that there is a different “normal” blood pressure for every adult age. For adults, the standard categories are generally the same whether you’re 30, 50, 70, or 80. The 2025 AHA/ACC guideline defines normal blood pressure as below 120/80 mmHg. professional.heart.org+1

Age Normal blood pressure
18–39 Below 120/80 mmHg
40–59 Below 120/80 mmHg
60–69 Below 120/80 mmHg
70–79 Below 120/80 mmHg
80+ Below 120/80 mmHg

Adult blood-pressure categories

  • Normal: below 120/80

  • Elevated: 120–129 and below 80

  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139 or 80–89

  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher or 90 or higher professional.heart.org

A single reading isn’t enough to diagnose hypertension. Proper technique and repeated measurements are important. www.heart.org

What about older adults?

Don’t assume that high blood pressure is automatically “normal for your age.” Treatment targets can be individualized based on overall health and medical conditions, but the normal category itself doesn’t become higher simply because someone is older. professional.heart.org

🚨 Very high readings

If your blood pressure is over 180/120 mmHg, repeat it after resting. If it remains that high and you have chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness/numbness, vision changes, severe headache, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical care. www.heart.org

Bottom line: For most adults, under 120/80 mmHg is considered normal, regardless of age.
