A natural approach to relieving occasional constipation
For occasional constipation, a few simple measures can help without relying on a “miracle” remedy.
-
Prunes or prune juice: Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, which can help stimulate bowel movements.
-
Kiwifruit: Provides fiber and may improve stool frequency and consistency.
-
More fiber: Gradually increase vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, and whole grains.
-
Adequate fluids: Drink regularly throughout the day, especially as you increase fiber.
-
Movement: A daily walk or other physical activity can encourage normal bowel function.
-
Don’t ignore the urge: Give yourself enough time to use the toilet, preferably at a regular time each day.
Avoid extreme “natural laxatives”
Large amounts of herbal preparations, oils, or “detox” drinks can cause diarrhea, dehydration, or electrolyte problems. Natural doesn’t automatically mean safe.
If constipation is persistent or keeps returning, talk with a healthcare professional. Seek prompt medical care for constipation accompanied by severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, significant abdominal swelling, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or inability to pass gas.
Bottom line: For mild, occasional constipation, prunes, fiber, adequate fluids, and regular movement are reasonable first steps.
