If you start to suffocate and you are alone: save your life in a single second

If you mean a viral claim about what to do if you’re choking while alone, there is an important correction: there is no guaranteed “single-second” trick. A severe airway blockage is an emergency.

If you are choking and alone

If you cannot speak, cough forcefully, or breathe:

  1. Call your local emergency number immediately if you can. Put the phone on speaker.

  2. Give yourself abdominal thrusts: Make a fist and place it just above your belly button and below your breastbone. Grasp the fist with your other hand and make quick, forceful inward-and-upward thrusts.

  3. If that doesn’t work, press your upper abdomen against a firm, non-sharp edge such as the edge of a countertop or chair back, using forceful upward pressure.

  4. Continue until the object comes out or help arrives.

Don’t deliberately lie down and wait, and don’t waste time trying to drink water to push the object down.

If you’re able to cough forcefully, keep coughing—forceful coughing can be effective at clearing the airway.

If you become unconscious, you can no longer perform these maneuvers yourself, so getting emergency help as early as possible is critical.

If you meant a particular viral “one-second” choking trick, paste the post or describe the technique and I’ll tell you whether it’s safe.
