Very Leafy Orchid? Water It With This to Help It Bloom Beautifully 🌸
If your orchid has lots of healthy green leaves but refuses to flower, the answer usually isn’t a secret kitchen ingredient. Orchids need the right combination of light, watering, nutrition, and temperature to bloom well.
💧 What Should You Water It With?
For most commonly grown Phalaenopsis orchids, plain water is perfectly fine.
When the orchid needs nutrients, use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted according to the product’s instructions rather than homemade mixtures such as milk, sugar, coffee, or vinegar.
☀️ 1. Give It Bright, Indirect Light
A bright location near a window can provide the energy an orchid needs to grow and flower. Avoid intense direct midday sunlight that can scorch the leaves.
💦 2. Don’t Keep the Roots Constantly Wet
Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain completely.
The potting medium should have time to dry somewhat between waterings. Constantly wet roots can encourage root rot.
Never leave the orchid sitting in a container of stagnant water.
🌱 3. Fertilize Carefully
During active growth, an orchid fertilizer can provide nutrients that support healthy leaves and roots.
More fertilizer isn’t better. Over-fertilizing can damage roots.
🌡️ 4. Give It the Right Environment
Stable temperatures, adequate humidity, and good air circulation can all contribute to healthy growth.
Some Phalaenopsis orchids also benefit from a modest difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures as they prepare to produce flower spikes.

Rice water, milk, sugar, banana peels, coffee, and other homemade mixtures aren’t guaranteed orchid fertilizers and can encourage mold, pests, or other problems if used improperly.
