Your fingernails can reveal clues about your health—but can they really tell you how long you will live?
The answer is more complicated than many headlines suggest.
One nail finding doctors sometimes pay attention to is nail clubbing. This occurs when the fingertips become enlarged and the nails curve more prominently around the fingertips. The change usually develops gradually and can affect several fingers.
Clubbing isn’t a diagnosis by itself. In some people it is harmless or inherited, but newly developed clubbing can be associated with underlying conditions involving the lungs, heart, digestive system or other parts of the body. That’s why doctors may investigate it rather than simply treating the nail appearance.
Why would a nail change be linked to longevity?
The nail itself doesn’t contain a reliable “life-expectancy clock.” Instead, some nail abnormalities can be markers of diseases that may affect health and survival.
For example, if a person develops clubbing because of an underlying lung or heart disorder, the underlying disease—not the nail shape itself—is what may influence their long-term outlook.
This distinction is important. Finding an abnormal nail does not mean that someone has a serious disease, nor can it tell a doctor exactly how many years a person has left.
Other nail changes worth noticing
Clubbing isn’t the only nail change that can deserve medical attention. Changes in the nails can sometimes accompany nutritional deficiencies, infections, inflammatory conditions, medication effects or systemic illnesses.
Pay attention to changes such as:
