What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

Blood pressure doesn’t have a single “normal” value for each age. For most adults, the same general ranges are used regardless of age.

Typical adult blood-pressure ranges

Age Generally healthy range*
18–39 Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg
40–59 Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg
60+ Around 90–120 / 60–80 mmHg

*These are general reference ranges, not a diagnosis. Blood pressure varies with the person, time of day, medications, and medical conditions.

For adults, commonly used categories are:

  • Normal: less than 120/80

  • Elevated: 120–129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic

  • High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 or 80–89

  • High blood pressure (Stage 2): 140+ or 90+

  • Very high: 180+ and/or 120+, particularly if accompanied by symptoms, requires urgent medical attention.

For children and teenagers, normal blood pressure is different and depends on age, sex, and height, so there isn’t one number for each age.

If you tell me the person’s age and their blood-pressure reading (for example, 145/92 at age 55), I can explain what that reading generally means.
