5 colors to avoid after 50: they can dull your glow

  1. If you’re referring to a fashion/beauty claim, there’s no universal rule that people over 50 should avoid particular colors. Skin tone, hair color, contrast level, and personal preference matter much more than age.

Colors that can sometimes make a person look washed out—at any age—include:

    • Very pale beige or gray when they closely match your skin tone

    • Yellow-green or olive if they emphasize yellow/green undertones

    • Icy pastels if your natural coloring is warm or has low contrast

    • Very dull brown when worn close to the face

    • Harsh neon shades if they overpower your natural coloring

A simple test is to hold the color near your face in natural daylight. If your complexion looks brighter and your eyes look clearer, it’s likely working for you; if it makes shadows, redness, or dullness more noticeable, try a different shade.

And importantly, being over 50 doesn’t mean you need to stop wearing any particular color.
