What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health?

Urine color can offer clues about hydration and certain health issues, but color alone can’t diagnose a medical condition.

  • 🟨 Pale yellow: Usually normal and often consistent with adequate hydration.

  • 🟡 Dark yellow or amber: Commonly means the urine is concentrated, often because you need more fluids.

  • 💧 Very clear: May simply mean you’ve consumed plenty of fluids. Persistently excessive urination and thirst should be evaluated.

  • 🟠 Orange: Can occur with dehydration, certain medicines, or some liver/bile-duct problems.

  • 🩷 Pink or red: Beets and some other foods can cause this, but it may also indicate blood in the urine, which should be checked if unexplained.

  • 🟤 Brown or tea-colored: Can occur with severe dehydration, certain medications, liver problems, or muscle injury and warrants evaluation when unexplained.

  • 🟢 Green or blue: Uncommon, but certain medicines, dyes, or infections can produce unusual colors.

  • ☁️ Cloudy: May occur with crystals, dehydration, urinary infection, or other conditions.

When should you seek medical advice?

Don’t ignore persistent red, brown, or unusually cloudy urine, especially if you also have burning during urination, fever, back/flank pain, abdominal pain, or changes in how frequently you urinate.

Bottom line: Pale yellow urine is generally reassuring, while dark yellow urine often reflects concentration. But a persistent or unexplained color change is worth discussing with a healthcare professional rather than trying to diagnose it from color alone.
