The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It!

The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in the Throat—and What Helps

A small amount of mucus in the throat is normal. Persistent phlegm, throat clearing, or a sensation of mucus stuck in the throat can have several causes. It isn’t necessarily a sign of a serious illness.

7 common causes

  1. Postnasal drip
Allergies, colds, sinus inflammation, or nasal congestion can cause mucus to drain down the back of the throat.

  2. Acid reflux (GERD)
Reflux can irritate the throat and cause throat clearing, coughing, hoarseness, or a “mucus” sensation—even without typical heartburn.

  3. Allergies
Pollen, dust mites, mold, pets, and other allergens can increase mucus production.

  4. Respiratory infections
Colds and other infections can temporarily produce more mucus, and the cough or mucus sensation can sometimes persist after the infection improves.

  5. Smoking or vaping
Inhaled smoke and other irritants can inflame the airways and increase mucus.

  6. Asthma or chronic lung disease
Conditions such as asthma and COPD can cause ongoing cough and phlegm.

  7. Dryness and dehydration
Dry air or inadequate fluid intake can make normal mucus feel thicker and harder to clear.

What you can try

  • Drink enough fluids throughout the day.

  • If nasal congestion or allergies are involved, consider saline nasal spray or a saline rinse.

  • Avoid smoking and vaping.

  • If reflux seems likely, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss persistent symptoms with a healthcare professional.

  • A clean humidifier can be useful if indoor air is very dry.

  • Avoid repeatedly forcing yourself to clear your throat; frequent throat clearing can further irritate the throat.

When to see a doctor

Get evaluated if symptoms persist for several weeks, repeatedly return, or are accompanied by unexplained weight loss, fever, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, persistent hoarseness, or significant chest symptoms.

Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, or coughing up a significant amount of blood.

There is no scientifically proven “mucus detox” drink that cleanses the throat or lungs. The most effective treatment is to identify and treat the underlying cause.
