Not every two days, not every four days: how often should you wash your hair, according to a dermatologist?

How often should you wash your hair?

There isn’t one magic schedule such as “every two days” or “every four days.” Dermatologists recommend adjusting washing frequency to your scalp’s oil production and your hair’s texture. AAD+1

A useful guide:

  • Fine, straight, oily hair: You may need to shampoo daily or every other day. AAD

  • Medium/thicker hair: Every 2–4 days may work well, depending on oiliness.

  • Dry, curly, coily, or thick hair: Wash when needed rather than on a fixed schedule; some people can go considerably longer between washes. AAD

  • Dandruff or an oily, itchy scalp: More frequent washing—and sometimes a medicated dandruff shampoo—may be appropriate. AAD

The simplest rule

Wash when your scalp becomes oily, itchy, sweaty, or develops buildup—not simply because a certain number of days has passed.

When shampooing, concentrate it on the scalp and roots, rather than aggressively washing the entire length of the hair. Conditioner can then be applied to the lengths and ends, particularly if they’re dry. AAD

And if you’re older, you may naturally need to wash less often because scalp oil production can decrease with age. Cleveland Clinic

If you have persistent itching, redness, heavy flaking, sores, or unexplained hair loss, that’s a reason to have your scalp evaluated rather than simply changing your washing schedule.
