If you’re checking the claim behind that post, these are 10 changes commonly recognized as possible early warning signs of dementia:
-
Memory loss that affects daily activities — especially repeatedly forgetting recently learned information.
-
Difficulty with familiar tasks — trouble completing routines that were previously easy.
-
Problems planning or solving problems — such as difficulty managing finances or following a familiar recipe.
-
Confusion about time or place — losing track of dates or becoming lost in familiar surroundings.
-
Difficulty finding words — struggling to follow or participate in conversations.
-
Misplacing things repeatedly — particularly when the person can’t retrace their steps.
-
Poorer judgment — unusual decisions involving money, safety, or personal care.
-
Withdrawal from hobbies or social activities — especially activities they previously enjoyed.
-
Changes in mood or personality — unusual apathy, irritability, anxiety, or suspiciousness.
-
Problems with visual or spatial abilities — difficulty judging distance, recognizing objects, or navigating.
Important: These symptoms don’t automatically mean dementia. Depression, medication side effects, sleep disorders, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, infections, and other conditions can produce similar symptoms.
If the change is sudden over hours or days, don’t assume it’s dementia. Sudden confusion can be a medical emergency and needs prompt assessment.
