5 Foods Rich in Estrogen
Strictly speaking, foods don’t contain human estrogen. Some plant foods contain phytoestrogens—plant compounds that can interact with estrogen receptors in the body. Their effects are much weaker and different from the body’s own estrogen.
- Soybeans and soy foods 🌱 — Tofu, tempeh, edamame, and soy milk are among the richest dietary sources of isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen.
- Flaxseeds — Ground flaxseed is particularly rich in lignans, another class of phytoestrogens.
- Sesame seeds — Sesame contains lignans and can be easily added to meals, salads, or baked foods.
- Chickpeas and other legumes — Beans, lentils, and chickpeas contain various phytoestrogen compounds.
- Dried fruits — Prunes, dried apricots, and some other dried fruits contain lignans and other plant compounds with estrogen-like activity.
One important point
Eating these foods doesn’t necessarily increase estrogen levels significantly. Their effects vary depending on the food, amount consumed, individual metabolism, and hormonal status.
If you’re considering phytoestrogen-rich foods because of menopause symptoms, fertility, low estrogen, or hormone balance, it’s best to discuss your specific goal with a healthcare professional rather than trying to manipulate hormone levels through food alone.
