8 Plants That May Help Reduce Mice, Mosquitoes, Spiders, and Other Pests Around Your Home

Yes—some plants contain aromatic compounds that may discourage certain pests, but viral lists often exaggerate their effectiveness. Plants alone generally won’t eliminate an established infestation.

8 plants that may help

  • 🌿 Peppermint: Its strong scent may discourage some insects and rodents, although simply growing peppermint isn’t a reliable mouse-control method.
  • 🌱 Basil: Its aroma may help deter some flying insects, especially around outdoor seating areas.
  • 🌿 Lavender: The fragrance can be unpleasant to some mosquitoes and other insects.
  • 🌱 Rosemary: Its strong aromatic oils may help discourage certain insects.
  • 🌿 Lemongrass: Contains aromatic compounds related to citronella and may provide some mosquito-deterring effect.
  • 🌿 Catnip: Contains nepetalactone, which has demonstrated insect-repellent activity in research.
  • 🌿 Marigolds: Their scent may discourage some insects, although claims that they create a pest-proof barrier are overstated.
  • 🌿 Chrysanthemums: These plants naturally contain pyrethrins, compounds used in some commercial insecticides. Simply having chrysanthemums around the house, however, isn’t equivalent to using a formulated insecticide.

What about mice?

Plants are not a dependable way to get rid of mice. If mice are entering your home, the most effective approach is to seal gaps and openings, remove accessible food, store food securely, and use appropriate traps or professional pest control when necessary.

Likewise, for mosquitoes, eliminating standing water around the property is usually much more effective than relying on plants.

So think of these plants as a possible supplemental measure, not a replacement for proper pest control.
