If you have a heart attack at home, do this in 10 seconds and you can save your life.(1 / 2)

That viral claim is misleading. There is no 10-second maneuver that can reliably stop a heart attack or “save your life” at home.

🚨 If you think you’re having a heart attack

Act immediately:

  1. Call your local emergency medical service and say you may be having a heart attack. Don’t drive yourself.
  2. Stop what you’re doing and sit or rest in a comfortable position.
  3. If you have prescribed nitroglycerin, use it exactly as previously instructed.
  4. Aspirin: If emergency medical professionals advise it, and you are not allergic, don’t have a bleeding disorder or active bleeding, and haven’t been told to avoid aspirin, they may recommend chewing an appropriate dose while waiting for help. Don’t delay the emergency call to take it.
  5. If you become unconscious and aren’t breathing normally, someone nearby should call emergency services, start CPR, and use an AED if available.

Typical heart-attack symptoms include pressure, squeezing, or pain in the chest, pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or unexplained weakness. Symptoms can be different in different people.

Don’t cough repeatedly, perform strenuous movements, or try internet “heart attack hacks.” They aren’t proven treatments and could delay lifesaving care.
