7 Signs of Arthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore
Arthritis isn’t just an ache that comes with getting older. Different types of arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and changes in how your joints move. Recognizing persistent symptoms early can help you get the right treatment.
1. Persistent joint pain
Pain that keeps returning or lasts for weeks—especially in the hands, knees, hips, feet, or spine—deserves attention.
2. Morning stiffness
Stiffness after waking up can occur with arthritis.Stiffness lasting longer than about 30 minutes can be particularly suggestive of inflammatory arthritis.
3. Swollen joints
A joint that repeatedly becomes swollen, puffy, warm, or tender may be inflamed.
4. Reduced range of motion
Difficulty fully bending, straightening, or moving a joint can occur as arthritis progresses.
5. Joint pain after activity
Osteoarthritis often causes pain that becomes worse with activity or repeated use and improves with rest.
6. Grinding, clicking, or cracking with pain
Joint noises alone are often harmless, but persistent grinding or clicking accompanied by pain, swelling, or reduced movement should be evaluated.
7. Symptoms affecting several joints
Pain, stiffness, or swelling in multiple joints—particularly when accompanied by fatigue, fever, or prolonged morning stiffness—can indicate an inflammatory form of arthritis and warrants medical assessment.
When to seek medical care
Make an appointment if joint symptoms are persistent, worsening, or interfering with everyday activities. Early evaluation can help distinguish osteoarthritis from rheumatoid arthritis, gout, injury, and other conditions.
Seek urgent care for a joint that suddenly becomes extremely painful, swollen, red, and hot, particularly if you also have a fever. This can sometimes indicate a joint infection or another condition requiring prompt treatment.
