Very dirty mop, do not buy it again: a drop of this ingredient and it will be as good as new again

If you’re referring to the

viral cleaning tip “Very dirty mop? Don’t buy a new one—add a drop of this ingredient and it will be like new,” the ingredient is often claimed to be dishwashing liquid, vinegar, baking soda, or bleach, depending on the version of the post.

But there is an important safety point: don’t mix household cleaning chemicals just to restore a mop. In particular, never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acids, or other cleaners because dangerous gases can form.

A safer way to clean a dirty mop

  1. Remove hair, dirt, and debris from the mop head.
  2. Rinse it thoroughly with warm water.
  3. Soak it in warm water with a small amount of ordinary laundry detergent for about 10–15 minutes.
  4. Wash and rinse thoroughly.
  5. If the manufacturer’s instructions allow it, disinfect the mop according to the product label.
  6. Air-dry it completely before storing it.

If the mop head is badly stained, smells persistently foul, or has visible mold that cannot be removed, replacing the mop head may be safer and more hygienic than trying to restore it.
