If you have these lines on your nails, you should pay attention.

If you’re referring to the common health claim about lines on the fingernails, the important point is that not every nail line means disease.

  • Vertical ridges (running from the cuticle toward the tip) are common, especially with aging, and are often harmless.
  • Horizontal grooves or lines (Beau’s lines) can occur when nail growth is temporarily interrupted—for example, after a significant illness, injury, high fever, or major physical stress.
  • A dark or black line under one nail deserves more attention. It can sometimes be caused by injury or pigmentation, but a new or changing dark streak can rarely be a sign of melanoma and should be checked by a dermatologist.
  • White lines or spots are usually caused by minor nail trauma rather than calcium deficiency.

When to get checked: If a line is new, appears on only one nail, becomes wider or darker, changes over time, or the surrounding skin also becomes pigmented, arrange a medical evaluation rather than assuming it’s a vitamin deficiency.

Nails can provide clues about health, but a nail line alone cannot diagnose a disease.
