5 Serious Signs Your Liver May Need Urgent Attention
Your liver performs many important jobs, and liver problems can sometimes develop without obvious symptoms. Certain warning signs, however, should not be ignored.
1. Yellow Skin or Eyes
Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, called jaundice, can be a sign of a liver or bile-flow problem.
2. Severe or Persistent Abdominal Pain
Pain or swelling in the upper-right part of the abdomen can sometimes be associated with liver problems.
3. Confusion or Extreme Sleepiness
Sudden confusion, unusual drowsiness, or changes in alertness can occur with serious liver dysfunction and require urgent medical attention.
4. Vomiting Blood or Black Stools
These can indicate internal bleeding and require immediate emergency care.
5. Rapid Swelling
New or rapidly increasing swelling of the abdomen or legs can occur with advanced liver disease.
Important: These symptoms do not always mean you have liver disease, but some can signal a medical emergency. If you have severe symptoms, confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, or rapidly worsening jaundice, seek urgent medical care.
Early evaluation can help identify liver problems before they become more serious.
