9 Signs of Diabetes That May Be More Noticeable at Night

Diabetes can cause symptoms at any time of day, but some may become particularly noticeable overnight. These symptoms don’t prove that you have diabetes, since several other conditions can cause them.

  1. Waking up repeatedly to urinate — excess glucose in the blood can cause the kidneys to excrete more glucose and water.

  2. Strong thirst at night — increased urination can contribute to dehydration and thirst.

  3. Night sweats or sweating episodes — particularly in people taking insulin or certain diabetes medications, this can be a sign of low blood sugar.

  4. Shaking, hunger, or a racing heartbeat during the night — possible symptoms of hypoglycemia.

  5. Restless or disrupted sleep — fluctuations in blood glucose can contribute to sleep disturbances.

  6. Itchy or unusually dry skin — high blood glucose and dehydration can contribute to dry, itchy skin.

  7. Tingling, burning, or numbness in the feet — nerve damage associated with diabetes can cause symptoms that are more noticeable when you’re lying quietly at night.

  8. Slow-healing cuts or recurrent infections — these aren’t exclusively nighttime symptoms, but may become apparent during nighttime self-care.

  9. Persistent fatigue the next morning — frequent urination, thirst, or nighttime glucose fluctuations can interfere with restorative sleep
