8 Plants That May Help Repel Mice, Spiders & Other Insects πΏ
Some strongly scented plants contain compounds that may discourage certain insects or rodents, but no plant will reliably keep an entire home pest-free. Their effectiveness also depends on the pest, concentration of the scent, and where the plant is placed.
-
Peppermint β Its strong menthol scent may discourage some insects and rodents.
-
Lavender β The fragrance can be unpleasant to some moths and insects.
-
Rosemary β Its aromatic oils may help deter certain insects.
-
Basil β Its strong scent may discourage some flies and mosquitoes.
-
Mint β The aroma may help around entryways and outdoor areas.
-
Marigolds β Often planted near gardens because their scent can discourage some insects.
-
Catnip β Contains nepetalactone, a compound that has insect-repellent properties.
-
Sage β Its aromatic oils may help deter some insects, particularly when used around outdoor areas.
π What about mice and spiders?
It’s important not to overstate the effect. Growing peppermint or another plant is unlikely to eliminate a mouse infestation, and there is limited evidence that simply keeping plants indoors will reliably repel spiders.
For mice, sealing holes and gaps, removing food sources, and keeping food in sealed containers are much more dependable. For spiders, reducing insects around the home, removing webs, and sealing entry points can help.
Also, some essential oils and plants can be toxic to pets, particularly cats and dogs, so check their safety before placing them where animals can reach them.
