6 Reasons Why You Might Pee a Lot đ˝
Frequent urination can be harmlessâsuch as after drinking lots of fluidsâbut sometimes it points to an underlying condition.
Youâre drinking a lot of fluids
Water, tea, coffee, and other beverages naturally increase urine production. Caffeine can have an additional diuretic effect.
Caffeine or alcohol â
Coffee, energy drinks, cola, and alcohol can increase urine production and may make you feel the need to urinate more often.
Urinary tract infection (UTI)
A UTI can cause frequent or urgent urination, often with burning, pelvic discomfort, or cloudy/strong-smelling urine.
High blood sugar/diabetes
When blood glucose is very high, the kidneys excrete more glucose into urine, pulling water with it. Frequent urination may occur along with increased thirst, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss.
Overactive bladder or bladder irritation
The bladder may contract before it’s full, causing urgency and frequent trips to the bathroom. Certain foods and drinks can aggravate symptoms.
Medications or other medical conditions
âWater pillsâ (diuretics), pregnancy, prostate enlargement, kidney problems, and several other conditions can increase urination.
When should you get checked?
See a healthcare professional if frequent urination is new, persistent, worsening, or disrupting your sleep, particularly if you also have excessive thirst, pain or burning, blood in the urine, fever, back/flank pain, or unexplained weight loss.
Urgent care: seek prompt medical attention for inability to urinate, severe flank/back pain with fever, confusion, or significant blood in the urine.
