Natural Ways to Get Rid of Ants Without Harsh Chemicals
If ants are invading your kitchen or home, you can often reduce the problem with simple, low-toxicity measures rather than immediately reaching for insecticide.
🌿 1. Remove what attracts them
Ants are usually following food and water sources.
- Wipe up crumbs and spills promptly.
- Store sugar, honey, pet food, and other food in sealed containers.
- Empty garbage regularly.
- Fix leaking faucets or pipes.
- Clean sticky areas around appliances and countertops.
🧽 2. Erase their scent trails
Ants leave chemical trails that help other ants find the same food source. Clean their trails with soapy water or a household cleaner, paying particular attention to areas where you see ants repeatedly.
🚪 3. Seal their entry points
Check around windows, doors, baseboards, pipes, and utility openings. Caulk small cracks and gaps to make it harder for ants to get inside.
🌱 4. Try scent-based deterrents
Some people use peppermint or other strongly scented essential oils around entry points. These may temporarily discourage ants, but evidence that they provide reliable, long-term control is limited.
🪴 5. Check the garden
Trim vegetation touching the house and look for aphids on plants. Aphids produce honeydew, which can attract ants.
⚠️ A common misconception
Cinnamon, coffee grounds, citrus peels, vinegar, or essential oils aren’t guaranteed to eliminate an established colony. They may discourage ants temporarily, but they usually don’t address the nest.
If you have a persistent infestation, especially carpenter ants, finding and eliminating the nest is much more effective than repeatedly treating the ants you can see.
