5 Symptoms of a “Mini-Stroke” in Seniors That Shouldn’t Be Ignored
A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is often called a “mini-stroke.” It can cause stroke-like symptoms that may disappear after minutes or hours. Even when symptoms go away, a TIA is an emergency warning sign because a major stroke can follow.
1. Sudden weakness or numbness
A person may suddenly develop weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
2. Sudden trouble speaking
Speech may suddenly become slurred, unclear, or difficult to produce. The person may also have trouble understanding what others are saying.
3. Sudden vision changes 👁️
Temporary loss or blurring of vision in one or both eyes can occur. Some people describe it as a curtain or shade coming over their vision.
4. Sudden dizziness or loss of balance
Unexpected difficulty walking, severe dizziness, loss of coordination, or inability to maintain balance can be a warning sign.
5. Sudden confusion or difficulty understanding
A person may suddenly seem confused, disoriented, or unable to understand familiar words or instructions.

Don’t wait for symptoms to return or become worse. A TIA and a stroke can initially look very similar, and only medical assessment can determine what happened.
If these symptoms are happening now—or happened recently and then disappeared—seek urgent emergency medical evaluation. Note the time symptoms began, or the last time the person was known to be well, because that information can affect treatment decisions.
Age doesn’t make these symptoms “normal.” Sudden neurological changes in an older adult should always be taken seriously.
