How to Wash Yellowed Pillows: 3 Tips to Make Them Fresh Again šŸ›ļø

Yellowing is usually caused by sweat, body oils, saliva, and moisture building up over time. Here’s a simple way to freshen washable pillows.

1. Pre-treat the yellow areas

Mix:

1 cup warm water
½ cup white vinegar
1–2 tablespoons baking soda

Apply a small amount to the stained areas and gently work it in. Let it sit for about 15–30 minutes.

Don’t mix vinegar and baking soda in a sealed container—the reaction produces carbon dioxide. If using both, apply them separately rather than storing them as a mixture.

2. Wash according to the care label

Check whether your pillow is machine washable first.

For washable synthetic or down pillows:

Use warm water if the care label permits.
Use a small amount of mild detergent.
Run an extra rinse to remove detergent residue.
Washing two pillows together can help keep the machine balanced.

Avoid bleach unless the manufacturer specifically says it’s safe for the pillow.

3. Dry it completely

This is crucial. A damp pillow can develop mold or mildew.

Use the drying method recommended on the care label. If machine drying is permitted, use a low or moderate temperature and make sure the pillow is completely dry before using it. Fluff it periodically during drying.

⭐ Keep pillows whiter for longer

Use a washable pillow protector underneath the pillowcase and wash the protector and pillowcase regularly. This prevents sweat and oils from reaching the pillow itself.

Important: Memory-foam and latex pillows generally should not be put in a washing machine or dryer. Their care instructions are different.
