How to Make Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

For most solid gold and many plain jewelry pieces, gentle cleaning at home can restore some of the shine without harsh chemicals.

Simple method
Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap.
Soak the jewelry for about 5–10 minutes.
Gently brush it with a very soft toothbrush, especially around settings and crevices.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth, then allow it to dry completely.
Important: Don’t use this method on everything

Avoid soaking jewelry if it contains pearls, opals, turquoise, emeralds, glued-in stones, or other delicate/porous materials unless you’re sure the material can tolerate water. Pearls in particular can be damaged by chemicals and prolonged moisture.

Also avoid using toothpaste, bleach, abrasive powders, or rough brushes. They can scratch metal or damage gemstones and finishes.

For sterling silver, a silver-polishing cloth is often safer and more effective for tarnish than homemade abrasive mixtures.

If you tell me whether your jewelry is gold, silver, diamond, pearl, or costume jewelry, I can give you the safest cleaning recipe for that specific type.
